What's included in a stump grinding job

When we grind a stump, we don't just shave the top off and call it done. Our standard service takes the stump well below grade so the spot is genuinely usable afterward — whether you're putting in sod, a flower bed, a fence post, or a shed pad.

• Below-grade grinding — we take the stump down 6 to 12 inches below ground level, deeper if you're planting a new tree or pouring concrete over the spot.
• Surface roots — the big anchor roots that hump up the lawn and catch the mower deck get ground out too, not just the trunk.
• Grindings as mulch — the wood comes back up as a pile of clean mulch you can spread on beds, or we rake it into the hole as fill.
• Cleanup — we rake the area smooth and leave the grindings or backfill how you want them, so you're not staring at a crater.

If you want a fully finished, ready-to-sod spot, we'll haul the grindings off and bring in screened topsoil to backfill the hole level with the surrounding grade. That's an add-on, and we'll tell you the cost up front.

How the grinding process works

Stump grinding is a same-day job for most yards, and the actual grinding on a single stump is usually under an hour. Here's how a typical Pickens-area visit goes:

• 1. Walk and check. We look at access, measure the stump at ground level, and locate anything underground first — irrigation lines, septic lines, low-voltage and utility lines. On red-clay lots near Lake Keowee we pay special attention to drainage and downhill spread.
• 2. Clear the area. We pull loose rocks away from the stump (rocks are what dull and chip grinder teeth) and rake back the leaves and mulch so we can see what we're cutting.
• 3. Grind it out. The grinding wheel sweeps across the stump, chewing it down in passes until the wood is gone to depth and the major roots are out.
• 4. Finish the spot. We rake the grindings level, leave them as mulch or backfill, and tidy up so the area is ready for whatever you're putting there next.

Because the grinder reaches over and across the stump, we can usually get to stumps in tight spots — close to a house, fence, or driveway — without tearing up the surrounding yard the way a full dig-out would.

Equipment, depth, and options

The right depth depends entirely on what you plan to do with the spot, so we ask before we start. A stump you just want gone so you can mow over it doesn't need to go as deep as one you're replanting a tree into.

• Standard lawn grind — 6 to 8 inches below grade. Good enough to sod, seed, or mow over with no hump and no exposed root ball.
• Deep grind — 10 to 12+ inches, for a new tree, a fence post, footings, or a slab where you can't have roots in the way.
• Surface-root chasing — we follow and grind out the roots that ridge up the lawn or crack a sidewalk, not just the center stump.

Stump grinding pairs naturally with our other work. If we're already on site for tree removal, grinding the fresh stump while the equipment is there is the cheapest time to do it. The same goes for land clearing and forestry mulching — when we're clearing a lot, we can grind the stumps flush so the ground is ready to grade, sod, or build on. Ask us to bundle it.

Signs you should grind that stump now

A stump in the yard rarely stays a small problem. In Upstate South Carolina's damp, clay-heavy soil, an old stump becomes a pest magnet and a rot pile faster than people expect. It's worth grinding if you're seeing any of these:

• Sprouts and suckers — shoots coming up from the stump or roots, especially on sweetgum, poplar, and bradford pear. They'll keep coming back until the wood is gone.
• Ants, termites, and beetles — a rotting stump is a buffet for carpenter ants and termites, and they don't stay in the stump; they move toward the house.
• Mower and trip damage — you keep catching the deck on it, dinging blades, or someone's tripping over a half-hidden root.
• Mushrooms and soft rot — fungus and a spongy, collapsing stump mean active decay that spreads through the surrounding soil.
