What's Included With Our Forestry Mulching

Forestry mulching is selective clearing done in place. Instead of pushing everything into a pile and burning it — or hauling it off in trucks — a spinning drum with carbide teeth grinds the vegetation where it stands and lays it back down as mulch. You keep the trees you want, the ground stays covered, and you skip the burn permits and hauloff charges entirely. Here's what a typical job with us covers:

• Underbrush and briar removal — clearing out the tangled understory, blackberry, greenbrier, and saplings choking out a wooded lot without touching the mature hardwoods or pines you want to keep.
• Standing-tree mulching — grinding trees and saplings roughly up to 8 inches in diameter into mulch in a single pass; larger trees we drop and process or remove separately.
• Trails, view corridors, and sight lines — opening clean walking paths, hunting lanes, ATV trails, or a window to the lake or ridge without bulldozing the whole property.
• Fence lines and property lines — clearing a maintainable strip along a boundary so a fence can go in straight and stay accessible.
• Pasture and field reclamation — taking back overgrown fields, old homesteads, and grown-up pasture that's gone to brush and cedar.
• Kudzu, vines, and invasive thickets — knocking back the aggressive growth that takes over fast in our warm, wet Upstate summers.

How Our Forestry Mulching Process Works

We don't quote land-clearing off a satellite photo. The work starts with us actually setting foot on your property so the price and the plan match what's really out there.

• 1. We walk the land with you. We look at how thick the growth is, the size of the trees, the slope, where the wet spots and rock are, and which trees you want left standing. You tell us the goal — thin it out, open a trail, clear a building spot, take back a field — and we tell you straight what mulching can and can't do for it.
• 2. We mark what stays and what goes. Forestry mulching is selective, so we flag keep-trees and lay out corridors before the machine ever starts. This is where it beats dozer clearing — you get to keep the canopy and the character of the land.
• 3. We mulch in place. The drum mulcher works through the marked area, grinding brush and small trees down and spreading the chips as it goes. One machine, one operation — no chipper trailer, no burn pile, no convoy of dump trucks.
• 4. We clean up the edges and grade if needed. We even out the mulch, handle any oversized trees or stumps that need separate attention, and if the job calls for it we follow up with grading, stump grinding, or a driveway — all things we do in-house.
• 5. We leave you a finished, walkable property. When we pull out, the land is open, covered in mulch, and ready to use, not a moonscape of bare dirt and tire ruts.

Equipment, Mulch, and the Options on the Table

The heart of the operation is the drum mulcher — a hydraulic head with carbide-tipped teeth that spins fast enough to chew standing brush and small trees into chips. We run it on the right carrier for the lot: a skid steer or compact track loader gets into tight spots and threads between keep-trees, while an excavator-mounted head reaches up banks, over rock, and into the steep grades you find all over the Blue Ridge foothills. Tracked machines spread their weight out, so they leave a far lighter footprint on soft or sloped ground than wheeled equipment or a dozer would.

A few things worth knowing before you decide:

• What it handles well: brush, briar, vines, saplings, cedar, and trees up to roughly 8 inches. That's the sweet spot where mulching is fastest and cheapest per acre.
• Where it hands off to other equipment: big hardwoods, hazardous leaners, and anything near a structure or power line we take down with our tree-removal crew. Large stumps we grind below grade. Heavy dirt work — building pads, drainage, driveways — we do with our excavation and grading equipment.
• The mulch itself: the chips break down over a season or two and feed organic matter back into our notoriously stubborn red clay. On a slope, that layer is genuinely protecting your soil from washing out while grass or new growth establishes.
• Mulch vs. dozer-and-burn: traditional clearing leaves bare, compacted dirt, burn scars, and a hauloff bill. Mulching leaves ground cover, no fire risk, and no debris to dispose of. For most Upstate acreage clearing, that's a better outcome and often a better price.
